The Liberal family settled on the estate in the 1700’s, working as intermediaries between wine producers and the market. In 1855, the estate was classified as a 5th Growths and in 1960; the Cruse family acquired the estate and began an extensive replanting program. Today the estate is owned by Villars family and managed by Claire Villars Lurton who studied at the Faculty of Oenology in Bordeaux and trained alongside her grandfather, Jacques Merlaut. The estate includes three vineyards, the largest is adjacent to Chateau Latour, with a smaller parcel next to Chateau Pichon-Lalande and both are near the Gironde River. A third vineyard is further inland near Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste. Sixty nine acres of vines are planted to soil consisting of deep gravel over well-draining limestone, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot and Petit Verdot. The average vine age is 30-35 years. La Fleur de Haut-Bages Liberal is a second label of Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal.
