One could say that wine is part of Bernard Portet8217;s DNA. Born in Bordeaux, France, Bernard grew up playing in the vineyards of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. As the son of the estate’s long-time regisseur, Bernard learned his craft from some of the world’s finest winemakers. He later moved to the United States and founded Clos du Val, a Napa valley estate renowned for its balanced and elegant red blends. Bernard Portet and his son Olivier produced Malbec in Mendoza, Argentina, under the label Nandu. The grapes are sourced from parcels located just south of Mendoza, in the regions of Maipu and Lujan de Cuyo. Here the soils are a mix of clay, sand, silt gravel and small stones. The wine is named after the Nandu, a large, flightless and rarely spotted bird that is native to Patagonia. Their first vintage of Nandu was 2004.
