Dr. Heger is located in Ihringen in Baden, Germany and was founded in 1935 by physician Dr. Max Heger. Today it is run by his grandson and winemaker Joachim Heger. The south facing Ihringer Winklerberg Vineyard spans 49 acres and is planted on red and black volcanic rock with loess top soils. The seven acre Achkarrer Schlossberg Vineyard is comprised of weathered volcanic rock with loess top soil. Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris are the primary varietals, but Riesling and Sylvaner are also grown. The red grapes ferment for 18-25 days and are matured for 12-18 months in barriques. The white grapes are fermented in oak barrels. In 2013, Joachim Heger was named Wine Producer of the Year by Gault et Millau and Dr. Heger was awarded Wine Estate of the Year by Eichelmann’s Wine Guide.
